Why is this HEAT target important?
To provide professional and clinical leadership in reducing Healthcare Associated Infection (HAI) in hospitals and other settings ensuring safe and effective care and systems as well as maximising healthcare outcomes for patients.

C.diff infections
The target is to achieve a reduction of the rate of Clostridium difficile infections in patients aged 65 and over to 0.39 cases or less per 1,000 total occupied bed days.
For the year ending December 2011, the rate of identifications of CDI across NHSScotland was 0.30 per 1,000 occupied bed days among patients aged 65 and over.

The table below shows CDI cases per occupied bed days (65+) by NHS Board (year ending December 2011) and NHS Board LDP target. Small changes in the number of CDI cases in NHS Orkney, NHS Shetland and NHS Western Isles may significantly affect their rates in the table below.
