What is the target?
NHSScotland to reduce energy-based carbon emissions and to continue a reduction in energy consumption to contribute to the greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets set in the Climate Change (Scotland) Act 2009.
.
Why is it important?
Achieving a reduction in energy consumption and thus carbon dioxide emissions will make a significant contribution to the Scottish Climate Change Programme and to the UK domestic target of a 20% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions below 1990 Kyoto base year levels by 2010. Total energy consumption in NHS Scotland in 1990/91 was 8.81m climatically adjusted GJ
This will ensure NHSScotland contributes to the Scottish Government's National Outcome to "reduce the local and global environmental impact of our consumption and production".
.
Summary of Performance
NHSScotland to reduce CO2 emissions for oil, gas, butane and propane usage based on a national average year-on-year reduction of 3% by 2014/15 as a milestone to the elimination of the use of fossil fuels by 2050; and NHSScotland to continue to reduce energy consumption based on a national average year-on-year energy efficiency target of 1% by 2014/15 as a milestone to achieving an overall improvement by 2050 of 30% on the comparative performance as at 2009/10.
A new 2010/11 HEAT Target has been agreed which commits NHSScotland to reduce energy-based carbon emissions and to continue a reduction in energy consumption over the 5-year period to 2014/15 at which time the target will be reviewed based upon performance to that time. This target is designed to ensure NHSScotland's contribution to the greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets set in the Climate Change (Scotland) Act 2009.
