Justice Trilateral

01/02/2012

Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill and Community Safety Minister Roseanna Cunningham have taken part in the second justice trilateral meeting with counterparts in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.

They met Northern Ireland Justice Minister David Ford and Republic of Ireland Minister for Justice and Equality Alan Shatter in Belfast.

At the meeting, Ministers discussed issues including border policing, human trafficking, serious organised crime, police reform, forensics and The Offensive Behaviour and Threatening Communications Bill.

Mr MacAskill said:

"Co-operation and sharing information with our counterparts across the water is vital to ensure effective justice and protection of the public.

"This is the second trilateral meeting between Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland and we will continue to work together and share good practice in the future.

"We know that criminals don’t recognise borders. The Scottish Government takes the issues raised today, such as serious and organised crime, the security of our ports and airports and human trafficking very seriously. All three administrations and our partners in law enforcement will continue to co-operate and share intelligence to make our communities safer places to live."
