Housing trends in Scotland: quarter ending 30 June 2006

This bulletin presents data on housing activity in Scotland for April to June 2006. It includes information on public sector house sales, new house building, and local authority lettings and evictions. Due to housing stock transfers, figures for local authority dwellings do not include authorities with total stock transfers from 2003 Q2 onwards.

The main points to emerge from the bulletin are as follows:

  1. New house building: 8,985 new dwellings were started during the period April to June 2006, 3,194 (55%) more than during the same period in the previous year. 6,280 dwellings were completed, 88 (1%) less than during the same period in 2005.
  2. Sales of social sector dwellings: A total of 1,659 public authority dwellings were sold to sitting tenants in the period April to June 2006, a decrease of 493 (23%) on the same period in 2005.
  3. Lettings and evictions: During the quarter April to June 2006, there were 8,112 permanent lettings of local authority dwellings, 121 (2%) more than during the same quarter in the previous year. There were 249 evictions of local authority tenants this quarter, 2 (1%) less than during April to June 2005.
