Summary of responses to the consultation on the statutory notification requirement for potatoes introduced into Scotland from EU Member States.

On 7 March 2008 the Scottish Government sought views from stakeholders on the notification requirement for potatoes introduced into Scotland from elsewhere in the European Union.

Three responses were received. The following table summarises their comments on notification of different categories of potatoes introduced into Scotland.

Potato Council

Strongly support option 4 (statutory notification for all MS)

· Include in statutory notification.

· Possible exemption if produced within Safe Haven Certification Scheme

· Include in statutory notification, from all MS.

· Testing should be risk-based.

Pre-Basic Growers Association

Strongly favour option 4

(statutory notification for all MS)

Include in statutory notification, if originates outwith UK.

(Not mentioned)

NFU Scotland

· Favour option 4 (statutory notification for all MS)

· Testing could be risk-based.

Would be disproportionate to include in statutory scheme. Post-planting notification and Safe Haven Certification Scheme provide sufficient protection.

· Include in statutory notification, from all MS.

· Inspect only those from MS with disease outbreaks.

Government response
