The transition to a low carbon society is already underway. A low carbon society will use less energy and fewer resources: at home, at work, on the move and across the public sector. It is a society where more of the energy used comes from cleaner and renewable sources such as water, wind, wave and solar power.
It is a society that is ready and able to realise the economic opportunities that come from producing fewer carbon emissions, from improved energy and resource efficiency, and from reducing the level of reliance on carbon-based fuel.
And it is a society which acts responsibly, is mindful of future generations, and whose actions lead by example across the world.
Scotland - A Low Carbon Society is a flagship set of publications on climate change, energy and the low carbon economy which aims to support this transition and describe the benefits and opportunities of building a low carbon Scotland. The documents in this series are:
- Low Carbon Scotland: Meeting the Emissions Reduction Targets 2010-2022, published on March 14, 2011, describes the measures identified to meet the emissions reduction targets established by the Climate Change (Scotland) Act 2009, over the period 2010-2022.
- A Technical Appendix, also published on March 14, 2011, provides more detail about the analysis that underpins the figures used in the Low Carbon Scotland report.
- The Low Carbon Economic Strategy, published on November 15, 2010, sets the policy direction for low carbon economic opportunities, and aims to strengthen business confidence in exploiting those opportunities.
- The Low Carbon Scotland Public Engagement Strategy, published on December 30, 2010, explains our approach to informing people about what they can do to help Scotland take action on climate change. An update on progress on the actions is available here.
- Conserve and Save: The Energy Efficiency Action Plan, published on October 06, 2010, sets out in detail the actions the Scottish Government is taking to achieve a step change in energy use.
The Scottish Government's Draft Electricity Generation Policy Statement supplements and supports this suite. This report sets out the Scottish Government's latest position on the role of renewable electricity and fossil fuel thermal generation (coal, gas, oil) in Scotland's future energy mix.
