Health Protection Stocktake

The Health Protection Stocktake Working Group has been established following the overview and report on Public Health conducted by the then Director of Public Health of NHS Fife, Gina Radford, in 2008. This was commissioned following the publication of "Better Health Better Care" in 2007, which contained a number of proposals on the public health function in Scotland. The overview highlighted some of the strengths and weaknesses of public health in Scotland and suggested areas which could be improved or strengthened. The working group is chaired by Mr Jim Brown and has a core membership of key health protection stakeholders.

The Working Group will conduct a concise multi-disciplinary stocktake of health protection in Scotland, considering the themes from the 2008 report and key developments since that report, including the lessons learned from the handling of the H1N1 outbreak during 2009 and the early part of 2010.

The key themes that the group will be considering are:

  • Capacity and Resilience - including links to sharing functions/outbreak response/usual processes (outside of outbreaks)
  • Protocols underpinned by data systems and information
  • Workforce development and training
  • Governance, interfaces, relationships and structures.

Various papers, including the remit and membership of the working group, can be accessed via the links on this site, Minutes of meetings and papers considered by the group are published as soon as possible after meetings. The group is conducting a series of themed meetings which include presentations by invited presenters and will be consulting on its work.

The group is expected to make recommendations by autumn 2011. The remit and membership of the group can be accessed here.
