Introduction

What do these statistics cover?

Scottish Annual Business Statistics provides data mainly on the Manufacturing, Construction and Service Sectors in Scotland. The Annual Business Survey, from which the statistics are derived, covers approximately two thirds of the economy. The main sectors not covered are parts of agriculture, financial and the public sector. These statistics are therefore best suited to the analysis of individual industries rather than the economy as a whole.

The Tables include information on businesses' employment, turnover, purchases, approximate gross value added and labour costs. Data are classified according to industry group, geographical area and ownership. All figures are at current prices unless otherwise stated.

What year do tables relate to?

Please note that Tables contain 2008 and 2009 data published on a SIC 2007 basis only and were released on 31st August 2011.

When will the figures be updated?

New 2010 and revised 2009 figures are scheduled for release in late Summer 2012.

Important news
  • Insurance and Reinsurance data (SIC 65.1 and 65.2) is included in this publication for the first time.
  • Key sector data will not be produced on a SIC 2007 code basis from SABS until agreement has been reached regarding which codes should be included under each heading. If you would like to be kept informed about future developments on Key sectors, please register to receive updates via Scotstat (under Economy topic pick Key Sector Statistics).
  • SIC 2003 tables have now been updated with revised 2008 data and can be found under Publication and Tables Archive link. This will be the final set of tables published using SIC 2003 codes, which cover 1998-2008 data, as the Office for National Statistics are now only updating company information on a SIC 2007 basis.
