R&D Business Expenditure
There has been a significant gap in business R&D expenditure between Scotland and the UK, the EU as a whole and the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) averages in recent years. Scottish Business Enterprise R&D (BERD) expenditure was £622 million in 2010. This represented 0.52 per cent of Scottish GDP; the comparable figure was 1.09 per cent for the UK. The comparable figure for the EU is 1.16 per cent. The figure for the OECD is not yet available. Over the longer term from 1999 to 2010, BERD increased by 23.7 per cent in real terms, compared to an increase of 11.1 per cent in the UK as a whole.
