Fires in Scotland

In 2010-11, the total number of fires in Scotland was provisionally 38,927, which is 1 per cent higher than in 2009-10 (38,720). Of these, 34 per cent where primary fires (13,231), 62 per cent were secondary fires (24,162) and 4 per cent were chimney fires (1,534).

Primary fires include all fires in buildings (excluding derelict), vehicles or any fire involving casualties, rescues or fires attended by 5 or more appliances. Primary fires for 2010-11 are the second lowest in Scotland in the last ten years.

The provisional figure for fatal fire casualties in 2010-11 was 47 - a decrease of 12 (20 per cent) on the revised figure of 59 for 2009-10. This is the second lowest figure since 2001-02. The provisional number of non-fatal fire casualties in 2010-11 was 1,294. This has increased by 7 per cent (1,209) since 2009-10.
