Liquor Licensing
There were 17,021 liquor licences in force in Scotland at 31st December 2007, 213 less than 31st December 2006 and 311 (2%) lower than the figure for 1998. Over a third (37%) of the licences in force in Scotland were for off-sale premises and a further 30% were for public houses.
From 1998 to 2007 there was a 62 percent increase in the number of refreshment licences (from 416 to 673) and a 1 percent increase in the number of restaurant licences (from 1,500 to 1,514). By contrast the number of hotel licences (excluding restricted hotels which are not permitted to have a bar counter) decreased by 15 percent (from 2,562 to 2,174) over the same period.
The number of off-sale licences has remained fairly static with 6,337 in 1998 and 6,232 in 2007.
