Destinations of School Leavers

Just under 89 per cent of school leavers in 2010/11 were in positive destinations at September 2011, approximately 3 months after the 2010/11 school year ended.

Between 2009/10 and 2010/11 the proportion of leavers entering positive destinations - higher education, further education, employment, training, voluntary work or activity agreements - increased by just over two percentage points to 88.9 per cent. The proportions entering higher and further education increased by 0.1 percentage points each, to total 63 per cent. The proportion entering employment increased by 0.8 percentage points to 19.3 per cent. The proportion of school leavers unemployed and seeking employment or training in the autumn after leaving school has decreased to 9.6 per cent.

Note (1): Leavers going onto voluntary work can be identified separately only from 2006/07, and would previously have been included with those unemployed and not seeking work.

The Scottish Government established a National Indicator to increase the proportion of school leavers in positive and sustained destinations, this is monitored via a follow-up survey of school leavers roughly 9 months after leaving school. In March 2011, approximately 9 months after leaving from the school year 2009/10, 85.2 per cent of young leavers were in positive destinations, this is similar to the previous year.
