Since 2006, all reasons for additional support have been collected, rather than just a pupil's main difficulty in learning. This has lead to an increase in the reported incidence of each difficulty. 2008 was the first year in which this was fully implemented. The number of pupils with Additional Support Needs increased markedly between 2008 and 2009 due to changes in recording practices and efforts to improve processes around data capture.
